Our History
In 1968, James and Cardrienne P. Griffin founded Women Behind CORE as an adjunct to Baltimore’s chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). They recognized the unmet needs of African Americans in the Baltimore Metropolitan area. The organization was renamed, Women Behind the Community, Inc. (WO-BE-CO) by Irene B. Reid and incorporated in 1969. OR
Women Behind the Community, Inc. (WO-BE-CO) was founded in 1968 by James and Cardrienne P. Griffin as an adjunct to Baltimore’s chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). Women Behind CORE recognized that African Americans in the Baltimore Metropolitan area had many unmet needs. The members decided to continue their quest to serve the community.
The 501 C (3) organization was renamed Women Behind the Community (by Irene B. Reid) and incorporated in 1969. WO-BE-CO has been actively serving Baltimore Metropolitan communities for more than 50 years.
WO-BE-CO is a 501(c) (3) service-driven non-profit organization that thrives on being a voice for the voiceless.
